Memory card is giving error message what to do?

I recently bought a new Sony camera and when I was trying to take a snapshot then it was giving me error message “Memory Card Error”. Why is it showing this message I am very confused as I am worried about all my memory card data. My friend told me that my camera’s memory card has been corrupted. If it has been corrupted then how will I recover my lost memory card data? Anybody help…
