How to recover HFS file format ?

I am a mac user and using mac10.4. My system supports HFS format. I was doing some applications development and suddenly what happens I don’t know but my files are corrupted and error message is displaying on monitor is file system corrupted. Now how can I get them back? Please can anyone help me?
